Life expectancy
If you have had your furnace or boiler for 20+ years you could assume it is nearing the end of its life expectancy. A lot of times older systems have parts that are discontinued and can be much more expensive, if not completely unavailable. (Note: if you consistently have your units professionally maintained, you can be sure to add a longer lifespan to your unit.)
Efficiency
Even if you completely restore an aging unit (which is expensive to do!), you will still only have the efficiency that it was rated for when it was manufactured, at best. In a lot of cases, installing a new heating system can pay for itself in energy savings within a relatively short period of time.
Current Condition
If you have not maintained your unit and breakdowns are happening more and more frequently, You should begin to consider replacing your unit. This is a big decision, so have a professional provide you with their suggestions. Also, make sure to check for any warranty’s the unit provides.
